When a Booster Pump Makes Sense for a Rural Property

A rural property may need a booster pump when the water supply is adequate, but the system cannot maintain enough pressure at the home, barn, livestock area, or other point of use. This often happens because of long water lines, elevation changes, several water uses running at once, or water being delivered from a storage tank.


A booster pump does not make a weak well produce more water. Before adding one, the full system should be checked to confirm that the problem is pressure—not the well supply, pump, pressure tank, piping, or treatment equipment.

The well may originally serve a small home and a few outdoor faucets. Later, the property owner adds livestock, irrigation, a workshop, a barn, a guest house, or a second living area.

  • Water pressure is strong near the well but weak farther away.

  • A home, barn, or livestock area sits uphill from the water source.
